On February 10, 2012 over 350 supporters of Cal Baseball attended the First Pitch Scholarship Dinner in Berkeley.  This event, organized by the Cal Baseball Foundation, was the first-ever pre-season scholarship fundraiser for the Program and the response was overwhelming with over $70,000 raised!

The event honored the 2011 Cal Bears College World Series Participants. Head coach Dave Esquer awarded each player with a CWS participant ring and gave special thanks to the Cal Athletics Department staff who played a very important role supporting the team through the 2011 campaign.

The Foundation extended congratulations as well to former Cal players who participated in the College World Series in 1947, 1957, 1980, 1988, and 1992.   The Foundation honored the efforts of the Save Cal Baseball Campaign that raised funding to continue the program for the next seven to ten years, during which time the Foundation will work to establish a permanent endowment for the program.

The evening’s event recognized the leadership of Stuart Gordon with citations from the Cal Baseball Foundation and UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau.  The Foundation presented a check for $300,000 to the Chancellor for deposit into the baseball fund at the UC Berkeley Foundation. A letter of congratulations from President George H.W. Bush (former Captain of the Yale baseball team which was defeated by Cal in the inaugural 1947 College World Series) was also presented.

Very special thanks to Roxy Bernstein as MC, and the volunteers who organized the event, which included a silent and live auction and a wonderful video tribute to the Cal Baseball program created by Dave Pullman (Hotshots Video) and Andrew Sproul.
